W.I.P. . . ("The Boxing Brunette") UPDATE: FINISHED!

I like how the overhead spotlight came out!

This one's big--14" x 17". A commission from A.P.E. Now I have to color it. Oy, vey!

Obviously I'm trying to channel those great Playboy-type artists. I say "Playboy-type" 'cuz when the fella who wants this described his idea of a gorgeous brunette astride her vanquished adversaries in a boxing ring, my first thought was of "Wicked Wanda" from the 70's era Penthouse mag...which then prompted me to do a search of same.

Dang! That's one amazingly gorgeous "strip" (*ahem*)!

Said the artist's name is Ron Embleton--a name I'd never heard before. I remember these from my dad's stash o' flesh mags, hadn't seen her since maybe '83?? What an indelible mark she made on my young mind!

Anyone shopping for me for Xmas, you are welcome to locate a collected volume of these and send it my way.

p.s. Is this too dirty for this site? Guy begged for topless--and who am I to censor the human form???

UPDATE: started coloring last night...felt tip marker, as per usual: (ADDED ANOTHER--it's funny--they just keep coming out looking like old Playboy illustrations--I'm not trying to copy them, I swear!)

I say, "Too beautiful a drawing to be offensive in any way." That's what I say anyway.

I've always been intrigued by this piece of trivia - From Wikipedia's article on Michelangelo's The Last Judgment:

"The genitalia in the fresco, referred to as 'objectionable,' were painted over with drapery after Michelangelo died in 1564 by the Mannerist artist Daniele da Volterra, when the Council of Trent condemned nudity in religious art."

Beautiful figures. Girly art might be something to put you over the top recognitionwise. Why not go the Frank Cho route. Make sure there are lots of these figures in Fume.

I'll look for the Wicked Wanda anthology. If I can't find that I'll send you the 60's soft core sleaze fest I think the Wicked Wanda name came from. I saw it at a drive in.

"Most of Wanda’s adventures were collected in a Penthouse anthology, long out of print, and used copies are rare and expensive. So come on Kramer’s Ergot and you trendy hipsters, it’s time to sort out a proper reprint and allow a new generation to appraise Wicked Wanda’s fulsome assets".

Here you go. Christmas in October

Thanks for the link Ellis. So Wicked Wanda was the Penthouse version of Little Annie Fanny, eh?

MrGoodson2 said...

I was aware of it . And my reaction was sophisticated. Not pervy enough to top how good Little Annie Fannie looked. So much stiffer than the Playboy Fanny strips. Reads well. First rate chops as a mid level Paperback Illustrator.

Elz, that link is great! I hadn't found the actual stories...holy crap, they did those to a very high level, didn't they??

As a kid, I was never that taken with Lil' Annie Fanny (?)--in my adolescent reading of my absentee dad's left-behind men's mags, it was Wanda who I preferred.

And looking at this art (and story!), I stand by that verdict!

I'll post the finished piece...hope it's done soon.

MrGoodson2 said...

What's the arrangement Marty? Is he buying the original? Or can you sell him the digital finish?

Davis Chino said...

Elz, he commissioned me for an original.

$100 bucks.

And before you guys get all over my keister fer selling this too cheap, (thank you, BTW, for the sentiment), I can only do things one way and that's the best I can. So he lucks out with a nice piece. I'm OK with that...at this point in my art career.

...besides, this is way too tight to be really A-1 material.

Not like Ron Embleton!

You mentioned this commission Saturday and I imagined the Cassius Clay over Sonny Liston iconic photo - - with breasts. Your image is much better. Great work.

I'm with Tom... too beautiful a drawing to be offensive.

Tom, the da Volterra fig-leafing of M.Angelo's Last Judgement has quite a specific look--very afterthought-y. If I remember correctly, there was a movement to remove the da Volterra additions and return the fresco to original--but the actual plaster with the genitals from the wall when adding the drapery!

In their defense, the figures are pretty in-yr-face "nude-y" (we don't allow that sort of smut around here, do we??).

Don't know how definite that Council o' Trent ban on nudity in art was, tho'....

More from Wikipedia:

Restoration of the Sistine Chapel frescoes

The fresco was restored along with the Sistine vault between 1980 and 1994 under the supervision of curator of the Vatican Museums Frabrizio Mancinelli. The illustration reflects the restoration. During the course of the restoration about half of the censorship of the "Fig-Leaf Campaign" was removed. Numerous pieces of buried details, caught under the smoke and grime of scores of years were revealed after the restoration. It was discovered that the fresco of Biagio de Cesena as Minos with donkey ears was being bitten in the genitalia by a coiled snake. Another discovery is of the figure condemned to Hell directly below and to the right of St. Bartholomew with flayed skin. It was, for centuries, considered to be male until removal of the "fig leaf" showed that it was female.

The beauty of your ink marker coloring technique just blows me away every time I see it.

MrGoodson2 said...

The coloring is going great. The price is low but I love the fact that you don't do work that is not your best. Me, I have a very hard time doing my best. So it's not an issue.

Rickart said...

Michelangelo's females have always been a bit on the masculine side.
The color is looking good.

Tom Moon said...

The coloring continues to look marvelous!

The Blonde being knocked out is incredible. Great color and acting. This is going right onto ebay for 1000 bucks once he gets his hands on it.

My secret is never use black.

DAAAAMN! Like I said Marty, took us all to School. Love the pallet, texture, all of it.

Commissioner got one hell of a BARGAIN on this. Might find this one years from now on Heritage Auctions for Boo-Coo $$$$.

Thank you, James!!

She looks just like Kirstie Alley in "Wrath of Khan". Put pointed ears on her and the gold Star Fleet logo on her belt. Take prints to a Star Trek convention and stand back.

MrGoodson2 said...

Wow. The finish. Spectacular job Marty.
All the figures came out great. That glove slipping off the redhead's wrapped hand. So good.

Rickart said...

Yes, this dude got a bargain for sure. On the other hand, finding the price that lands the job without pricing out the client is pretty hard to do. Ultimately, the price is what ever you feel comfortable with. I charge a lot less for the drawings I do at a con than I get paid to do during my day job. On the other end of the spectrum I've done school fundraisers where I was working for free (well, actually, the school was getting paid for my work... and not a lot I might add). So pricing is a weird beast that depends a lot of circumstances and what the audience is prepared to bear... and what you as the artist is willing to bear.

Beautiful, saucy work, Marty!

I'm going to work for free at an Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley tomorrow. Probably won't be as busy as free comics day. I'll take pictures of what i produce.

Get good scans of the art Marty. Play with it in photoshop. You can do anything you want with it.

Hopefully you got good scans at every stage.

I agree about the Kirsty Allie (sp)resemblance.
