I got a message about a week or two back on my iPad that said someone was requesting to join TAG. I didn't recognize the name, and now I can't find any reference to it on the site. Did someone else take care of that request? I know where comment moderation is, but where are "join" requests found on the site?
...or maybe it's perfect timing for Thanksgiving. Either way, I am happy to announce that I just accepted an offer from Glu Mobile to work as a contract weapons artist on Deer Hunter 2014. Had an interview and an art test last week and I guess I passed. Glu made the offer official today. So, for the next six months, I will be crafting firearms for this fun game (Free-to-Play on iOS and Android). I really couldn't be more thrilled to be part of this team. With my Arkansas upbringing and six years making guns for the The Agency, I was born to make art for this game. Even better, some fellow SOE-Seattle alumni are at Glu, so I get another chance to work with some old friends.
This ends, for a little while at least, a lengthy dry spell between jobs. I was beginning to think my game-dev days were over. Then this popped up as if out of nowhere. I guess it's true you never know when something good is around the corner. Thanks to everyone for being so encouraging during some dark days. I really value the advice, friendship and help everyone has given me over the years. Hope everyone here searching for and needing a job lands a good gig soon!
This may be a keeper. I jumped too quick at Home Depot. I am not made to interact with the general public. The UPS job description is great, orderly, spartan, etc. Hard work but Home Depot was hard work plus a ton of aggravation.
UPS super benny- I work from 4 AM to 9 AM. I consider it like having every day off.
Anyway, pretty pleased with myself. You can tell from the photo how delighted I am.

Just walked off. Apologized to the guy that hired me.
You know the routine: they ask for a drawing, give you a big spiel about how much it would mean to them, won't you do it for yr old pal, etc., etc. You tell them you have to be paid for your work. They agree, then they start worrying. "It won't be TOO much, will it? smiley face." You agree to do it cheap. But of course you can't just dash something off...you get sucked in to the challenge, you want to make it worth yr while, so you really do a good job. Two days later you turn it over for a check that won't even cover dinner for you and the missus.
Sigh. I am such a softie. I swear this is the last time I am doing this without a reasonable fee.

Also a shot with some of my various wrasslin' drawings. You can see the final drawing of the big ring shot to the left--it is pretty much the final image, just a little level-tweaking in PhoSho after I scanned it.
Characters reappear in drawings because I start with one sketch, scan it, correct it, then print it, (usually on another sheet of bristol), and add more figures, building the crowd this way until I get everyone in. A slow method, but necessary to get it right at my skill level. A real expert would do it all in one go.
BTW...there is a way to do all this and make money, right? I mean, a living wage?
Finished that second wrasslin' image. Ideally I'd go back and redraw the whole thing as a single piece (this is frankenstein'ed together from a few separate drawings). Not as good as the first one, but, hey...I tried!
I've already looked at the place I'll be working. Somewhat Stygian but not a trace of the feeble minded general public wanting you to find a washer for their faucet. That's all it takes to make it a spectacularly better job.
Should become "permanent part time" if I show up on time and regularly. I'm the king of attendance and promptness.
I will work 4am to 9 am 5 nights a week.

I was trying to simplify the Riley method down to drawing a gesture "starfish" and then the core shadow line.
Found these from my layover at LAX Christmas week 2007. Was heading to my folks in Sacramento and there was a delay. Ellis was living nearby so he picked me up and we hung out. Took some shots of the Goodson castle for posterity.
Whatever your opinion is of the long-running, supremely polarizing and finally completed Cerebus, you cannot overlook the artistic contributions of Gerhard, Dave Sim's amazing background artist. The first time I read Cerebus, (in college in the early 90s) I was absolutely floored by the background art...those crazy, intricate backgrounds completely grounded the story of the grey pig with a sword with a solid, sinister reality. I wondered what kind of artist could produce such incredible work with such consistency for a monthly comic. It was the first time a comic truly felt 'alternative' to me (in the right sense of the word) and hinted at what was possible using just black and white and shades of grey. It was probably my first real 'adult' comic obsession, mainly because I just wanted to see more of the art.
I find it hard to believe that Cerebus has been over now for nearly a decade. Didn't seem like that story was ever going to end (and in truth, it lost me somewhere in the mid-90s), but it wrapped up in 2004 and Sim and Gerhard have moved on. Thought you all might enjoy an interview with the artist-with-one-name so I put a link to an interview and to his website/blog.

Does it look too dark (the colors--not the subject matter)?

p.s. a jpeg version always looks a little drab, doesn't it? I'm trying a tiff for the 2nd image....
...and it still looks totally blown out. Hmmph. The PDF I saved looks OK on my computer screen, but I don't think Blogger displays PDF's, does it?
(UPDATED AGAIN) I took yr advices, Ellis and Jimmy (via phone)...I think this is better, but there is some kind of gamma loss...or something?
(Updated AGAIN. Sorry, I just wanted to see the three stages all together. This is the one I'm turning in. I met Joe Sanabria for lunch and he looked at this and gave me about ONE MILLION great Photoshop tips for correcting my color problems and improving my image. And all for the price of a coffee. So far cleared $1200, unfortunately with the NEW rules at EBay....Fees are worse.....just remember it's 10 cents on the Dollar they take now. Problem with this, it really kills the small inexpensive items. with a $5 item they stiff you 50 cents +.65 cent Paypal fee and then if you offered FREE shipping. Your screwed. That's why crap is so expensive now.
I got a library copy of KIRBY-King of the Comics by Mark Evanier today. Some great stuff in it. When I saw this double page spread I wanted to scan it. I found it by surfing to the book on Amazon. It shows what I wanted to show. Look at the size of that original. Twice size. Not 150 percent bigger, twice size.
Showing a skill I could never acquire working that size. Not going overboard on detail. The marks to be inked are still big and bold. Very clear and readable.
