Here's an early test with Manga Studio 5 and the Frenden brushes.  I'm still exploring all of the brushes to find the one I like most.  The characters are done with the "Natural" brush and the background is done with the "Lettering" brush.  What do you guys think?  Is this a good look?

Looks like someone was inking with a brush. Nice and loose. Little too close on line weight for hatching weight to contour weight. Maybe crank down hatching weight a notch or so.

Worthwhile purchase it looks like to me. Good brush feel.

But you realize why the manga studio brushes seem so smooth. They default their resolution as 600 dpi. With some people going right on up to 1200 dpi to work. Brushes designed to work for Manga Studio are going to have that going for them.

I would get chugging to catch up if I used PS at 600 dpi. So Manga Studio does something right as a drawing tool that PS lacks.

I'm drawing in vector mode, so perhaps that has something to do with it, too.
I'm trying the flexible nib brush now and getting sharper results. I think I'm closing in on a good look.

I tried vector mode and it was just fine. Thought I'd want to go that way. Decided I liked a bitmap faux ink better

Looks great! Wonder if it would be possible using Photoshop or some other program to add a layer that gives a slight variation in tone to the ink strokes so they won't be quite so uniformly black. Just very subtle, as in Ellis's sketch below. Would that look better, or do you prefer the clean, even look to the strokes?

My plan is to stick with the black lines for now with the option to print a color book down the road. Also, I should say that this particilar image is meant to be over dark... it's a gag about movie spaceships always being underlit. Most of the story won't be so over-rendered.

Looks great to me--like the brushes were designed with the vaunted Schmitz-stroke in mind!

You are definitely getting your Manga Studio Mojo going, Rick. Awesome!
