Well, just got the word today

After almost one year of employment, The place I currently work put out notice that we are SOL at August end at the latest. We've had lots of departures in the last 8 months and no new hires. My current boss who I worked for left last week for a new assignment and kind of left the rest of us in the lurch. I anticipate they will start cutting us loose starting next month as most of the operation has been transferred to the east coast already. Kind of sad really after getting back to work only to get the shaft again. I've saved some money and I can keep afloat for awhile but I guess it's time to do something for myself now and move forward.

So sorry to hear that Jim. It's discouraging to hear that so many games companies are still continuing layoffs. I keep hoping the industry will turn around.

Did you do this piece as part of your job or is it a portfolio piece you did on your own? It looks great.

it was a port piece, had to put up something. And the gig I'm losing is in the DOD industry. I'm going to have to find something else. Got use to a steady paycheck again. I sure don't want to end up in the jobs gutter like last time. Time to work on my drawing again

Fill a Tumblr site up with pieces like that one.
I should follow the same advice.
Get some great job in Vancouver. Hang out with Rick.

I'm not moving. That much for sure

Hey Jim, have you done any UI work at your current job? I see loads of work for experienced UI people.

JMG said...

The answer is always no PRACTICAL UI experience. Never done it. And I'm working a DOD job now not games. LOW end power point trash and some PS work. Had to take what I could get. The character stuff I did was a side gig. I'll be lucky to get anything better outside the DOD. The only thing I got going now is a currently valid security clearance. That's gold in some circles. It beats the other crap I've had to endure these last five years. House sitting, dog walking, RETAIL. I was lucky to get the few gigs I did doing graphics and that was only through my few remaining contacts here. Ugh. Need to redo the resume now and update Linked In. Rather win the lotto

Hang in there, Jim. Hope you are able to make a smooth transition.

Now you get to hit Uncle Sugar for some more unemployment. Wish I could do that.

I just paid off the IRS, Don't want that mess again. Lucky I have a CC with a small balance and living expenses ONLY, better than the last time.

Well, I'm interviewing with Hobby Lobby in the frame shop tomorrow.
If I don't get it I think it's time to start collecting cans.

JMG said...

Ouch! Well I was doing that too to some degree, still do but you have to get A LOT to make it worth your while. I can fill up the enite bed of my truck with bags full of cans over the course of 6 months and get just $40. It's hard work too. The mess, the sorting. Ugh

That PDF is worthless.

Reminded me of John Cleese on Python as the preface lady, talking about brontosaurs.
