It has lots of refs to demons like alot of Japanese stuff does. It was done by a guy named Ikuo Oishi. Info has it he was killed during WWII. It wasn't until the 1950s that Osamu "Astroboy" Tezuka became know and started the animation boom that started the trend we still feel today. Kind of makes you wonder how Japan's animation industry would have turned out if this guy lived and became the animation king of Japan instead.
