Munchkinland

Here's another one. I feel good that it's only takes me one day to do these...until I think about how much I'm getting paid :-/

Had to get this up before the midnight deadline. I'll fill you in on details tomorrow.
(UPDATED VERSION)

Done for the co-author of the fascinating and lavishly illustrated "Memories of a Munchkin," a memoir by the little person who played the Munchkin Coroner. The over-sized Lollipop Kid is a caricature of the (surviving) co-author, Daniel Kinske, a really nice guy who, after fielding a bunch of questions from me about the legend of "Midget Town", handed me a copy of the book and asked only for a drawing in return.

I believe in "over-delivering."

Check out the book--great cover by Hirschfeld, too!

Wow! So above and beyond a marker caricature of a guy running in front of a wooden sign that says "Free Beer!"

Overdelivering is right! He got the better end of the deal, no question!

I imagine this might end up on a book jacket or two by the author. Super fairy tale color. Classic.

It's a lot better than that boring Hirschfield cover.

Only a day... it only takes you a day to do one of these drawings. If you could see me now, sitting at my desk sobbing, a broken man. Sob. The way you've captured that crinkly shiny boot material blows my mind. You must post these on Facebook TAG!

I too was going to comment on the shiny patent leather boots. And the nice golden mean placement of her crotch. Masterpiece. This may go viral. Put it on redditt. See how it does.

Dudes! Thank you! But isn't it interesting to compare the two--the Munchkinland caricature vs. the Evil Oz...the Evil Oz is sooo much better, esp'ly the posing. Munchkinland is so stiff...oh, well. They're just cheap-o commissions. I need to charge more for these if only to pay for replacement markers.

Again, thanks for the kind comments--glad you dig 'em!

All of these are pretty friggin' spectacular. How busy were you at the Ozcon... I guess fairly busy since you had to take some commissions home. Since I have observed you in action at a con, I know that the amount of work you put in is proportional to how much time you have... you have more time at home to fiddle with it you make it everything you want it to be at home than if you are trying to knock something out quickly and send a happy customer on his/her way at a con. There's no shame it doing your best work, but yeah, you need to charge more.
You are going to Rose City, yes?

Thanks Rick! Re: Rose City, I wanted to talk to you--I have a table for Rose City, but I am NOT going (conflicts with our vacation plans). Do you want to take the table? I should email this to you...in fact, i will!

Re: busy-ness: these two illo's were left over commissions--I couldn't fulfill these at the Con. I was medium busy in that I had a steady stream of very specific commissions--and they got pretty backed up!

Best thing I did was create a detailed pricing list--extra $ for extra figures, larger sized paper (a popular choice!) and for full color (also popular!). The problem was me taking too long to get these right...I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted these caricatures to look like, but it was hard getting there! Consequently, commishes kept backing up. So overall I'd say it went pretty well--esp'ly considering that there were FAR fewer people than at SD Comic Fest.

But overall lots of fun--I'd happily do it again!

Get super duper quality scans. This is future book material.

Ellis, I don't understand your "Free Beer" reference.

And what the heck was "The 'Roo Plays Baseball"? You go to the Amazon page and there's no text, no pictures, no reviews, no hint at all as to what it's all about. Is it really worth $350?

MrGoodson2 said...

This sort of party caricature. Big head, little body, running past a sign that is pointing in the running direction. It would say “Free Beer” “Party” “Girls” “Boys” The caricaturist makes the call. 7 Minutes per sketch

And no. The Roo Plays Baseball is not worth 350 bucks. Unless they throw in a good treasure map.

I'll be moving Belinda to Western Washington University that weekend, so Rose City probably isn't in the cards for me. :(

I can see if there's someone else who might be interested in the table for you, though. Lot's of Seattle artists like to set up at RCCC.

Rick, that's great about Belinda! Tell her congrats!!

No worries about Rose City--I've got friends in the city who would love to take it up!

I shall pass on the word!
