Dorf Is Down

Got this message after I mailed the prez of the cartoonist society as to Shel's health. Jim Gorham has tried to get in touch with Shel the past couple of days with no luck. Even going by his house and discovering loads of mail and closed up windows.

So her's the facts Karyl mailed to me.....

Hi Karyl,

Tommy Thompson informed me and Jack White that Shel is in Sharp Memorial Hospital. That's the one off Genesee Ave., not far from UCSD Medical Center.

I talked with Shel; he's in no pain, but he had a bad fall and will probably be pretty sore once they quit giving him the pain medicine.

He's in Room 860-1 and his phone # is (858) 939-3800. Jack seems to think they may be keeping him a while, but I'm sure he'd appreciate a call or a card or both.

I'm going to try to stop in tomorrow when I go to UCSD Medical.

Could you put out one of your all points bulletins on this?

All the best to you and Jack.
Jim

Ellis here....Hopefully Shel does recover. He is diabetic and the body doesn't heal like a heathy man would. And damn hospitals can kill you with pnuemonia as quick as any plague. So hopefully he gets at least well enough quick enough to avoid a lot of hospital.

I knew TAG would want to know. Good check up work by Jim.

My Blue Period

The one at the top has the "threat of beaver" effect I noticed in a Harvey Birdman character design. Birdgirl, when she is in her civvies. Specifically, the character opposite my vandalized head shot.

Hey Jeff. Great job on my Graffiti Robot. Thanx

Thanks Jeff

I joined. I haven't played with it yet. Just let all the ladies know I was available.

Hey , that crop is tough. I've got another high rise on the right side.

I added the title as a link to my facebook profile

Test

This is a Flash drawing program in Facebook called Grafitti. It allows playback so you can see it drawn right before your very eyes! I drew this for a friend and saw this little button at the bottom that said "embed". So I was just testing it out to see what happened. Well I guess it's not scaleable and it eats into the stuff on the right. Oh and I used a Cintiq to draw it.

EDIT: Sorry Ellis, the correct spelling is "Graffiti" And here is the link:

And here's a little better one than mine:

And another...

Mike Dietz used to be my friend

He and Marty are now exchanging caricatures of me.

Pretty impressive memory sketch.

He's captured the innard me.

MARTY "DAVIS CHINO" comment: Yes! Mike's is awesome--and bests mine in every area, esp. verisimilitude and technique.

Ellis Remixed

Maybe this one is more like it...? (Just Pho' Sho'.)

More Matte Painting Stuff

The Birds painting. Bad Glare, sorry.

The ancient Rome one, with a weird tangent of reflected hallway lined up with a painted building.

A shot of some of the art staff, FX department of one of the main studios.

Shot of the James Mason home in North by Northwest. On that one I believe Cary Grant walks toward a rear projection screen for that one. I need to see it again. Hitchcock films often had "bad " FX. He had a weakness for tabletop models.

Cowboy Fans Gun

Matte Addendum

Our intimidating foursome investigates oil-on-glass goodness. Ellis was right--a cool show. And a good time.

Something New ...

A new crazy face ... my son Nathaniel and I have taken to working on scribble drawings and silhouette shapes ... this is one that came out of one of our sessions ...

I'm probably going to do a little more with a few of these kind of crazy faces for an idea I have called "Gated Community." More as it happens.

I left a few notes in the margins ... all the more sketch book-like ...

;-)

Ranx Model

A guy at work sent this around. The title is a link to the artist's work. The upper body is great. i don't get the wide hips. Ranx had cartoony narrow hips

Playing God

Title is a link to the show that myself, Jeff Wand, Yongwoo and Marty enjoyed today.

Notice the size of that easel that Jeff Wand is next to. Only three were made. Enormous thing with sash counter weights so the artist could easily adjust the monster pieces of glass as he painted.

Vectorman!

Apologies for the voiceover. It's nigh annoying.

Godzilla meets Cloverfield?

A guy at work shared this with me... apparently it's a dream sequence from a film about post war Japan...

My friend thinks that this may be a foreshadowing of what Toho has in mind for future Godzilla movies.

John Phillip Law passes..........

The one actor who at least for me, was the most realistic portrayal of Sinbad in movies.

Damon Bard Maquettes

Jeff probably had a lot of first hand knowledge of this great artist, Damon Bard.
Daunting to realize if I started now I don't have enough life to get half as good as this guy at sculpting.

Summer Movie Predictions

Okay, so it's too late to predict how good or bad Iron man will be, but there's still plenty of others to make some guesses about. He's my unsolicted predictions (in order from "cool" to "sucky"):

Walle (totally cool)
Hellboy (way cool)
Narnia (Narnia will never be "cool", but there will be a story there)
Incredible Hulk (sort of cool)
Indiana Jones (not cool)
Speed Racer (daring, but never hits it's stride)
Kung Fu Panda (well, I like the character design... er, hmmm...nope, that's all I got)
Get Smart (the first trailer looked decent, and it's gone downhill from there)
The Spirit (oh god, don't give FM any more money!)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (complete drivel)

I guess I should elaborate on the Indiana Jones ranking... in my view, Raiders was the only good IJ movie, the other 2 are pretty awful. Also, I don't like that Transformers kid that's in it.... not. at. all. On the other hand, Karen Allen is in this one... most likely the main reason that the first one is so much better.

My New Blog

It's currently called "Brush Pen Breakfast," and gad I know that blows for a title, but I've been through a lot already, and none of 'em strikes me as quite right. It's a "work in progress." Any and all comments, suggestions, criticisms are welcome.

Anyhow, it's just a venue for posting the sketches I make during my morning coffee. I need structure, you see, (and caffeine), and I thought this would be a good outlet for my drawings--I don't want to clog up the TAG board with a buncha "Marty Art." Weekly post? Yes.

Everyday? No.

But if you DO want a Marty caricature everyday, juz check out BRUSH PEN BREAKFAST! Now in soy and lactose intolerant formulations!

Spider-Man, Iron Man and Hulk CG "Cartoon" Adventure

This is pretty cool, I think.

IGOR

object width="425" height="355">

Just got this letter from the Con. They sent my check back but still hold out the idea i'm on a list if space becomes available. Not likely.

Click the title for a link for a great article by Brad Bird on innovation. Awesome interview.

Added a flash animation that that brought me a little confidence if nothing else. Keeping it simple.

Adults

More vecotized versions of old drawings... I feel like my portfolio is getting a face lift! I also traded out some drawings elsewhere on my website. I'm not sure if they are improvements, but I am feeling better about the thing.
