I can't say I'm very excited that the Joker is the next Batman villain... Ras al Gul was a very compelling villain for the first film because he was Batman's equal. The Joker has never struck me as a guy who would be a challenge for Batman, so it's contrived to generate a movie around the idea that he would be. Perhaps the film's take on the Joker will make him a guy who might actually be able to take Batman in a fight, or make him really smart or something... Although I'm pretty tired of "genius" mass murders in films and TV, too (I blame the success of Silence of the Lambs).

I always thought it would be fun to have Christian Bale play Batman and the Joker in the same film ... but that's probably too crazed (and expensive?) to consider. I'm convinced he could have done it, though ...

As I recall, the Joker was supposed to be some common criminal who accidentally fell into a vat of chemicals that turned his skin white, hair green and lips red. So I take it that this "new look" is supposed to reflect that accident more realistically, and not make him look so much like a guy who carefully makes himself up every morning?

My guess is that the accident in question just makes him look like he's grinning all the time... the rest of it is makeup he puts on himself.

The first origin account, Detective Comics #168 (February 1951), revealed that the Joker had once been a criminal known as the Red Hood. In the story, a scientist looking to steal from the company that employs him adopts the persona of Red Hood. After committing the theft, Red Hood is dropped into a vat of chemical waste by Batman. He emerges with white skin, green hair, and a bizarre grin.
