This has the rough preceding the painting. This is just an easy visual aid for talking with Jeff Provine's students at OU tomorrow.

Repurposed old art to enter a Heavy Metal Cover contest
2000 dollar first prize.
I just like the logo on the old art. Groovy.
Now you can Vote.
Over 300 and climbing. Lots of them better than mine.

Two more done
Two easy ones left to do.
Then I do a finish pass on all 31.
Some of them are very lazily done.

Tuesday- More EnWorld
Rough.
Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu is my jump off for this Oriental Vampire.
Going to do something different this time.

Ordinarily I would start coloring this pencil stage.
This time I'll ink this drawing and clean it up. Then color something nice and clean. Basic Comic Book style procedure. Using the Muji pens and Fud Kuratake brush.
It will also differ in being very black, high contrast.
Inks. The only knock against the muji ballpoints, is that rolling over pencils, they get cloggy.

Prepping Trophy for a digital dispersal-
Cover from interior art
You should be able to read it on a smart phone.
I'll let you know when it is published.
Available here on Free Comics Day
Most of the prep work involved creation of these two new pages.

Made one mistake. Like Lulu, the cover is separate.
But I included the cover in the zip file.
No biggy.

Made the effort to start over
Passed a judgement of the version on top "this sucks." Not to mention it sucking my time.
Went to the web, got horses and dogs.
Made silhouettes of everything I got.
2nd easier to read result on the bottom.

Where a few pieces will go
This took about 3 hours to do.
The rough was too blurry. Usually I can use the rough, but here I had to paint into it. I suspect I uprezzed something that was scanned way too low rez.
Also made the mistake of not being simple enough.
I satisfied way early on the rough.
This guys asks about Tim's Vermeer by suggesting 'Consider the source'
I've decided I'm also a skeptic.
Initially one of my bumps was when he decides to make his own pigments.
Crayola sketch wizard. Pretty cheap.
And one person nails why skepticism is called for. Vermeer worked using glazed layers. Tim is Alla Prima. The bottom value study of Vermeer guided every other drop of paint that went on top. Something not even mentioned in the doc.
The original transcription of the scene, the bottom layer? Maybe an aid here or there.
Like the article writer points out parallax and distortion are constant headaches with Tim's tool.
My bet is Vermeer's only tool was a grid to peer through. Matched by a light grid on canvas.
