3rd Job this year - UPS-----Update- I quit

This may be a keeper. I jumped too quick at Home Depot. I am not made to interact with the general public. The UPS job description is great, orderly, spartan, etc. Hard work but Home Depot was hard work plus a ton of aggravation.
UPS super benny- I work from 4 AM to 9 AM.  I consider it like having every day off.
Anyway, pretty pleased with myself. You can tell from the photo how delighted I am.
Color blindness does me in again.
Couldn't do the sorting tasks that come at you like ocean waves.
The second day task escalation in general was Lucy Ricardo insane.
Just walked off. Apologized to the guy that hired me.
Going to work on Ebay exclusively for a time.
I have nothing but joint ache to show for it.
Great experience if I was writing a book.

The line of the cinder blocks reinforces that idea. Cameras refuse to take a flattering picture of me. I'm OK with that.

I'm preparing a bunch of past work for coloring. Should have a good sample page of work for commercial boards as a result. I tumbl'd two examples of the art. It's concepts for a walk through Chinese Haunted House. The drawings impressed several people at the OAF Con. And I realized I had something ready for commercial storyboards. If I'll step off and color it.

See if I can get work from Frameworks in Culver City. I probably will just because the bitter irony would stab me in the heart.

SOOO glad to hear the new job is a good'n.

Glad to hear you're prepping samples. But seriously, what about the Ellis Goodson Game Designer's Sketchbook???? You already got the goods. People would love it!!

Headline should read 3rd job in the past 7 months.
And I still have an application floating around out there for a graphic artist at Hobby Lobby. If that comes through I guess I go for it. I'll update on what actual work was like sometime this morning after 11 am central time. I supposedly do the actual work tonight.

Work was interesting. At one point I was operating on the edge of what I could do. It was aerobic and chaotic and lasted almost a solid 15 minutes.

But that was the worst. Had a shift that amounted to the guaranteed 3.5 hours. Done by 8 am in the morning.

Got till 4 am to recharge any batteries that need re-charging.

Beats hell out of Home Depot. The money is so piddly as not to be believed. Making enough money to tread water.

But I have all these daylight hours to make money using my illustration talent.

Yes! "Making the most of my illustration talent!"

Congratulations on the job, Ellis. If I don't land a gig soon, I'm going to apply at UPS myself.

MrGoodson2 said...

Ronnie. There has got to be a game job somewhere in that town for you. You have too many deep skills.

Surly Bird said...

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ellis. Definitely would love to land something... like yesterday. I've tried to use my free-time wisely, learning new tools, teaching myself new techniques, etc. Hasn't really helped me much, at this point though. Next on my agenda is to learn Python with the goal of becoming a technical artist. I started a few weeks ago, but have been randomized for the past week or so and need to get back on it. Can't see knowing how to program, at least at beginner's level as a bad thing. Might lead to work outside of games, but as long as the work is creatively challenging, I'm certainly open to it.

The tech artist path is a good one for you, particularly with your Unity knowledge.

Lasted 2 days. The bad thing is I liked it. Couldn't physically do the tasks ultimately demanded.

JMG said...

Sorry to hear, I knew someone back in the day worked there in OKC for a short time and quit for the same reasons. The physical demand was a pain.

Surly Bird said...

Sorry this didn't last, Ellis. Sounded like a solid gig. Hope you find something soon.

DAMN.

Hang tuff, Goodson. Better things will come along.

But in the meantime: DAMN.

MrGoodson2 said...

Thanks guys. It's an adventure at this point.
What is next?
It's almost like my own reality show.

MrGoodson2 said...

Just slightly less well scripted.

...But more skin.

This guy, Kid Lion, bought two of my werelion drawings for as much money as it would take me 2 days of passing out labor to earn. Time to start working smart. I've done my fair share of stupid stuff.
Located In Fairbanks, Alaska. Also sold a Batman sketch to a guy in Va.

I actually thought friends were buying the art and I didn't recognize their nicknames on ebay.

I'm more impressed by selling to strangers. It means I put something out there that got some fan action.

Strange that no mention was made about the color coding before they hired you, Ellis ... but no matter. I can't imagine you ever being happy with any kind of assembly-line type work, despite the nifty hours.

You belong in the Art world, working smart.
Appreciated, respected, and paid.

MrGoodson2 said...

Thanks Beata. I think I've had enough aversion therapy to teach me to go my own way. Time to get my mug off the top of the blog.

Training indoctrination before they put you in the line. I can't stop laughing! No such thing as OJT in this jacked up corporate run economy anymore. It's either you DO or Don't. There's somebody standing at the door for your job. They don't care. Meatgrinder toss in, the new normal. But yes, UPS should have put that out there before the hire. Would have saved you the grief and you could have at least kept the other gig regardless of your hate for it.

MrGoodson2 said...

Yes Jim. It was task thrust in your lap as OJT. It escalated to the sorting which might have been doable in a couple of days. Was impossible to this first timer.

Could have possibly had it researched, practiced in some way.

Rickart said...

I seem to recall the stat that one our of eight men are color blind... seems to me that they should have asked before the hire. Well, maybe they can't because of disability laws.
At any rate, I look forward to MORE ART!

Unknown said...

Their policies SHOULD have addressed color blindness in possible new hires. You gave up another job for this that your disability hindered your ability to do the that job. If they didn't address it before the hire. Sounds legally questionable. Corps are all about legal policies. Someone blew it and you paid the price. unsat.

Union shops are largely sink or swim environments for new fish. Especially temps that won't get a whiff of union eligibility for months to come.

MrGoodson2 said...

I call it a Union shop. You're surrounded by 95 percent teamsters even though Oklahoma is right to work. I was going to join. I'm no dummy.
