I just looked up Stephen Gammell. You should try a General Sketch/Wash pencil. Adding water to what looks like a charcoal pencil mark makes a wash. That's what the Gammell work reminded me. Drawing on wet area creates a dark. Adding ink later gets spots even darker. The wash washes away scribbles and you have the option of erasing before you add water.

Yes. Stephen Grammell knows what he's doing. I'm trying to get a method that gets me consistently close to something like it.

You are getting some serious atmosphere with this, Ellis. The foreground character's eyes are very spooky and intimidating. Awesome!
