I was walking home yesterday evening, very nice rain clouds on display. One clump had a cartoon aspect that you could make into a character a lot like the drawing you see. It was a leap I made to a more appealing design for my junkyard dog idea that I'm going to turn into a storyboard sample.
Obviously producing iterations now. What do you think. Jut jaw with tooth at the end? I think so.
And please, share a note if you feel like it. About the design. Draw up where it should go to make him more appealing. Jeff R, any mecha notes for hands would be welcome.
This post should also push off the last of the embedded video posts. Lets see how quick the page loads now.

I don't remember what the old Junkyard Dog looked like. Can you post it side-by-side with the new one?
Sure will. Thanks Tom
I'm afraid that I find the original more appealing. It's a little bizarre, sure, but has the appeal of looking well-proportined in the "manly-dog-looking" sense. The new design's cartoony proportions only make it look grotesque.
Thanks Tom. I'll continue to sketch and share some more later. I may be pushing to the 2 to 1 too hard
I understand you guys are under fire in San Diego. Hopefully they capture the guys doing the shooting. Infuriating lack of details on the report I saw. Are we ever going to get over this race omission sensitivity on crime reporting. Just lay it out. Here I'm reading between the lines that the shooters are Mexican gang types. They're supposedly in a vintage 60s Chevy.
Ellis, I agree with Tom that the original dogs have a more appealing overall look, (like Yogi Bear in their proportion), but I think some of that is the execution on your new quartet of potential dog designs. They look a little rushed, and the underlying shapes/masses don't look as clear/well thought out.
I personally like the potential of a less man-proportioned dog, but that doesn't mean you can't get the man-proportion to work. Again, I think clarifying the shapes of the heads will help.
With a bulldog-type, the strong underbite/jutting jaw is a must. The art will be in how much you push this feature. I like downplaying it a little, and focusing more on the eyes. The cartoon world is littered with examples of the bulldog type. Yours might be a little hound-ier, like the dog from Ruff n' Reddy.
Hanna Barbera would be a good place to look. Clean, clean shapes, clear ideas.
Mind you, I say all this as someone who's terrible at character design!
Marty. Great input! I'm loving my cintiq lately. I'll do some Hanna Barbera research today. Whip out a few bulldogs. Copying the Bruce Timm stuff is steadying my hand.
I'm thinking my sample would be more fun as an opening credits sequence for a Toth type show.

The new dogs were done on whiteboard, which I liked as a direct, expressive line. And easy erase and iterate ability.
