I'm not sure what to expect. Definitely Thor is one of the hardest comic concepts to pull off in the movies and play it straight.
But it demands some sort of drastic re-thinking to make it fit into the "real" world of movies, and that could be could very good or very bad.
It works so well as a comic book. It's actually kind of nice to think that sometimes comics have a power to enthrall the audience in a way that does not transfer to the movies.
In the same way, a lot of novels don't work as movies because a novel allows for so much more depth of thought and introspection on the part of the reader.
Guess I'll reserve judgement until I see more. What did you think?
I'm reading Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud again. You're right about Comics and film being such different animals that adjustments have to be made. That "closure" occurring in the gutters between Thor throwing his hammer and the next panel hitting something in a big dynamic way. That costs a million bucks in a movie and has a good chance of looking stupid even with that much money being spent on it. I liked the look of this and some of what they were hinting they might get into. Gotta watch those long exposition dialogue moments. That one guys pondering aloud what makes Thor so baddass gets my vote for being cut. I liked Gort from Asgard. Was that in the comics?
This still has a MODERN feel to it. The Kirby Thor era IS JUST so over the top as fantasy (which I like). This seems to pull back on that a bit. All but Balder seems NOT to be represented, I hope that is explained. The Frost Giants are not GIANTS it would appear, oh well. The Destroyer was DEAD ON. I'm looking forward to this BIG time. Thouest will top Iron Man me thinkith!
The Frost Giants are just shown with no human in frame at the same time. So you don't know their scale. They certainly weren't shot to appear anything but human scale.
I can watch old Dr. Who episodes and still be entertained, even though the FX are beyond cheesy. I think this looks kinda fun, as opposed to that horrible Batman/Joker movie, which was just mindlessly grim.
Rick, I concur completely with "The Dark Knight" assessment. One thing I liked about Iron Man was that it had a sense of fun to it and that was so sorely missing from Batman that I don't know where to begin.
RE: Thor. I love the Kirby design. It's pure comic-book cool straight up with no filter. Walt Simonson's run with Thor and Beta Ray Bill was inspired as well. I'm mildly interested in the movie Thor, but this version looks like it was inspired by recent reinterpretations in the Ultimates books or whatever. I haven't read any of that stuff so I have no idea what to think .

Gorham and I simultaneously posted
Yes, the GORT as you call him is, the DESTROYER. Odin created him as an ultimate weapon in the defense of Asgard
