new freelance gig

I'll be doing some Upper Deck art. 

The original sketch cards that get done and inserted as bonuses in sealed boxes.

No NDA yet but I've been told not to yack it up or provide details so I won't.

I look at what there is of this school of art and it tends to be a bit amateur hour.

I'll do my best and hopefully get some keepers as portfolio items.

The pay is nothing enviable. 

They send the paper, just like doing comics.

SketchUp and a Custom Shape for grids

Following this tutorial on youtube

I created a custom shape.

A 360 degree star that really makes great grids.

The lower grid is for a fantastic underwater city.

Updates later. Even if it doesn't turn out fantastic.

Bah. I could not do it all digital. 

It just went too far south as far as I could bear.

Traced it to clean it for clarity.
Also of note, I changed grids. It needed a horizon line.
The complete top down was very blah.
 Final color version misses grand scale by a mile.
But I hit a mental cut off point for hours spent.
Have I mentioned before I make 40 bucks apiece on these?

And as far as using my sketchup help for the bar scene,

Not when I luck into the perfect ref by googling. Color scheme and all.

Hopefully I get color done on both by no later than Tuesday.

SketchUp aid for the heck of it

I thought the bard piece was a gentle poke at cosplayers.

Setting was described as 'a small town.'

Just the wrong century in my mind.

Communication.

The one of the Bard on stage reminds me of doing art for computer edge back in San Diego, Blue Sky days.

SCIFI

This made me think of the sci fi paperback illustrator that depicted eyeballs on a gargantuan scale. He was big in the 60s.

I'll find an example of who I'm thinking of and add images to the thread. .
Mine needs some drama contrast.

Sketchup as a visual aid.

I'm dabbling with sketchup. Getting medium competent with it. A great FREE tool. But what I like most, vs doing the actual modeling, is importing useful things I don't want to model. Cars for instance. Also, the little standees, always facing the camera, are better than perspective for scale.

The bottom one is afterthought edits I'll never do to the original. Might drop them in on photoshop layers.
I've decide 50mm is probably the best all purpose lens.

Below-from the sketchup warehouse- Wayne Manor. From a search for room interiors. I'm getting an itch to start setting up quickly realized previz for a comic project.

I've got other enthusiasms this month. 

Once I get this one done, hopefully that's it for the freelance for July.

Got a way to go on this.

I've replaced the color version twice with newly edited versions.

Got another one. With characters that will resemble these.

I am tempted to just continue painting into this rough.

Cleaned it up for painting into.

Finished.

I changed it.

Changes were accepted.

Next time, something more like this.

I think I'll do a quick strip where all the roughs are on the whiteboard, then I finish with this graphic style in photoshop.

I have a cowboy story in mind. A cowpoke that is haunted by an Indian he killed with his own war knife. That's just a detail, not the story. The Indian ghost being a pain when he pops up. Landis' Werewolf movie having a similar gimmick.
